PandaDuck - Social Golf App Case Study

PandaDuck - Social Golf App Case Study

Challenge:

Golf apps often prioritize scoring and performance, but leave little room for the social and playful aspects of the game. The goal was to explore how a golf app could make the experience more engaging for a broader, more gaming-oriented audience without losing the familiarity and seriousness expected by golfers.

Key pain points identified included:

  • Manual and cumbersome score entry

  • Limited real-time communication between players

  • Repetitive, visually generic golf-app interfaces

  • No meaningful rewards or achievements beyond winning a game

Solution:

I designed an MVP for a social golf app that combines the structure of traditional golf with the engagement mechanics of modern gaming.

The experience was built around three core ideas: simplfy while keeping it fun, socialize, and reward.

  • Interactive scorecards — redesigned score entry to make tracking progress faster, more intuitive, and more engaging.

  • Social gameplay — enabled players to track opponents and communicate during a round without leaving the game experience.

  • Gaming mechanics — introduced XP, leaderboards, achievements, and unlockable rewards to give players a reason to keep progressing.

  • Character customization — added customizable avatars and an equipment shop, allowing players to build and personalize their in-game identity.

  • Golf-first visual language — balanced playful gaming elements with a refined interface and visual aesthetic that still felt authentic to golfers.

Results:

Following market and user research, competitive analysis, golf-specific research, wireframing, prototyping, and iterative UX development, I created an MVP ready for market testing.

User testing indicated strong interest in a more social and playful approach to golf. Participants responded particularly positively to the ability to build and customize a character, personalize their equipment, interact with other players, and progress through the game beyond simply winning a round.

The research supported the concept that there is an opportunity to complement the traditional golf experience with social interaction, personalization, and game-based progression.
